SLEEP IS HIGHLY OVERRATED
Well, will tonight be the night I get a full night's, uninterrupted sleep? Maybe. The kids went to bed very late so just maybe, they'll sleep right through. One can only hope.
Jesse usually sleeps right through but then he likes to get up around 6 a.m. To me, waking up at 6 when I don't need to until 7 during the week and whenever on the weekend is like being interrupted at 1 a.m. or 4 a.m. With Emily those 2 times can be a regular occurrence.
Emily was never keen on sleeping all night. Actually she finally started sleeping through when she was almost 3...right around the same time Jesse was born. New baby..back to square one! For the next year and a half, again not much sleep. Then it was time for me to go back to work and at the same time we moved to where we live now, that was 4 years ago.
Since we have lived here Jesse has done pretty well, usually sleeps all night but like I said, lately gets up very early. Sometimes I have to convince him that 5 a.m. is just too early to be up and playing and coax him into going back to bed.
My poor little Emily has been a different story. Sometimes she'll go through a spurt where she sleeps the whole night for quite a few nights in a row. Then there are the nights where she's up 2 or 3 times, has to go to the washroom or usually has had a bad dream.
Here's where the believe it or not part comes in...
My mom goes to this woman who does Reiki Therapy and is a "bodytalker". Near the beginning of this year at one of mom's appointments she asked mom if she had a seven year old granddaughter. She then asked if this granddaughter was having trouble sleeping. Mom told her that she was. She then told mom that back in the 1800's in a previous life, when Emily was 7 she was abused. No, I'm not making this up! She also told her that when Emily is saying that she's had a bad dream or is scared, it's because she really does "see" people! Talk about making the hair on the back of my neck stand up! She also said it may all get better when she turns 8. Well, she's 8 now and lately it has been better but there are still nights where it will be around 4 a.m. when she comes running into our room. And I do mean running! I don't know how but I will wake up as she's running in. It makes my heart beat faster every time!
I hope this post doesn't sound whiny because I'm really not complaining. It's just a fact of my life, and I guess I'm used to it. The one good thing though is that I usually have no trouble getting back to sleep after all my little visitors.
Could someone explain to me though who wrote the rule that children must ALWAYS wake up their mothers first! I remember when I was little I would never even think of waking my dad, I always went to my mom. Funny, nothing's changed in all these years.
On that note, I will now bid you all good night and wish you a fabulous night's sleep!

ahhh ... so now I know how you find the time to play online scrabble!! - marianne
I'm such a sound sleeper that my kids always went to their dad's side of the bed because I just didn't wake up. Smart aren't I? Now, the question is. Did I really not wake up or was I faking? Only I will ever know the answer to that one.
My oldest was a horrible sleeper, and the youngest came along just as he was beginning to sleep better. And Nicky still gets up in the night with some regularity--and he's 4 and a half. I feel your pain! AND, they both never sleep later than 6, ever :-)
I think my kids will be like me - fond of sleeping in.... at least that is the vibe I sent to them ON A DAILY BASIS!
Oh, not that is spooky!!!
My girls are like yours - ALWAYS come to me first. And generally sneak in our bed, just to feel safer. It's so sad really when they have bad dreams. My heart aches.
As for when they will sleep through the night...one can only hope it will be soon! In the meantime, I'm trying to enjoy the nighttime snuggles...even when I'd like my half of the bed to myself!
